Art & Fear

I've been negligent about this blog... mostly because i've been negligent about my art. With nothing new done, nothing new to put up.
But i started reading this book, aptly named "Art & Fear" and it got me thinking. I used to be more free, experimental about my work. I would "doodle" across any surface. Filling books up with pictures i would see in  magazines or think up in my head. I'd try every color combination i could think of. I'd even repeat the same posing over and over trying to get it just right. On top of all this i would write, anything everything. Thoughts ideas, even recipes.
Somehow i lost that. I started thinking more, this is got to be good enough for a portfolio, a reel, an example of my best work, and so the thought of drawing was no longer exciting. I didn't want to try anything because i was scared it would fail. And i've decided to stop that. I will draw, all the time. I will experiment, all the time. And you will see the results here. this was done a couple of days ago. i have already started a new one. I hope you enjoy.

Of things done and doing....

Lately I've been working on a not so secret project that is close to
my heart. More info to come soon, but here's a clue. Can you guess
what it is?

Sometimes you just don't want them anymore

Or at least that's how it seems. I always feel bad for abandoned
toys, don't you?

Butt Paste!!!!

This is one of the best named products I have ever encountered. Too
bad the people it is used on aren't aware of the awesomeness of the
name.

Enjoy, and let's hope that you never have to experience its soothing
qualities.

Eye candy

My friend was in a book called eye candy last year, and he's trying
for it again this year. The book and his attempts have inspired this
drawing. My own sexy girl. Hope you like.

Black cloud

By carlos amorales at the philadelphia museum of art.

Women, women, women....

These 2 pieces were drawn at the last Drawing class i went to. There was something samey about her poses so i took that time to try to define her form a bit better. As you can see i usually avoid faces as i have a tendency to make them look flat and the also samey. But again something else to work on. Funny how starting a blog makes you more aware of what needs to be done to improve your art, than probably art school/class alone does. I guess like a journal, where you write down your thoughts and thus go more into them, a blog forces you to show your work and thus justify or not justify them.
Either way, off to Philly today on a day trip, so you may get a quick pic of the Frida Kahlo exhibit i am off to see, and maybe some local renditions of her work by your truly.

Two more drawings.

A couple of weeks ago i posted a picture based off a photograph that i enjoyed in a magazine. I have since then purchased more magazines of that same type and produced first a quick color study of one of them... such as the pic on the left, and then last night i decided to tackle a slightly more complicated pose with the pic in the right. I also decided to practice the rendering techniques that many years of HS/College drawing classes taught me and emphasized in me. I hope it meets with everyone's tastes, but if it doesn't well...... tough. I enjoyed making and showing these two pieces. And you'll probably see more in this vein in the weeks to come.

Ps: I'm very proud of the way the feet and hands came out on the right. They're not perfect, but they're definitely better than what i would usually tackle. I'm thinking of doing a series of feet drawings, since they are so hard to do. Practice, practice, practice makes perfect!

Not ready for her close-up!

Been working on a tiny test of animation, but my program keep fraking
with me. Shot about 6 sec of animation today and can only see 3 sec.
Bummer. Once I get it all worked out you'll get to see it.

Something Colored and Finished!

Just to throw you all a curve ball and post up something that isn't just a sketch or drawing class. I drew this up last friday sitting on the bed watching bad tv. It's from a photograph, so i had to fudge some details, but it is 100% hand drawn and colored. The only thing computer generated is comping the scans together since it was drawn on 12x16 and my scanner doesn't see past 9x12. let me know what you think.

Figure Drawing Class 02/28/08

So these are the drawings from last the last class. I really liked how the last one came out, so I'm posting it up. I started to fall asleep because of over stress and had to go early. Thank god at least one came out good. Hope you all like.

"Metal Witch" Preview

So I've been working on this concept of a witch... mostly because i played a horrible game called "Bullet Witch" and thought i could do better. And after a couple of weeks of working out her mechanisms, clothing, hair, face, and some of her background, this is what i have. I still need to finalize her pose, color, and some details, but i wanted to give you a preview. When she is complete i will have full drawings as well as schematics on controller functions and detailed history. I challenge you to take an idea that sounded promising (which they screwed up) and redo it yourself for the better. It's Fun!!!
PS her movements will be based a bit on the Gun Katas of Equilibrium... which if you haven't seen, you're missing out!

Compare and Contrast

Just to give you a comparison of my drawings from class last year and this year. Please feel free to compare and contrast with at least 2 points from each side and in 50 words or more. Really lay into me, if needed.
Either way, hope you enjoy.

Figure Drawing Class 02/07/08

This model was very difficult for me to draw, mostly because i hadn't done figure drawing in many months, but also because her proportions were not traditional, so they made all my figures look badly drawn. This, though, was the only drawing that came out ok, and that i like.

Rock Star Eyes

I drew this a while ago while watching VH1 Classic. I think its Blondie, but i never really wrote down her name. She had a couple of moments in the video where she had these weird proportions and i made them more apparent. Also i did this without ever realizing (or forgetting) that i could pause the video and get a more accurate picture. Go figure!

A Sketch from the Cloisters

To go with my last post. This is one of the statues that I sketched out while enjoying myself there. Soon (hopefully) i will have my own Graven Images to post that are inspired by what I saw. I am currently working on them now.

Cloistered engagement

A side view of an awesome sculpture at the Cloisters with a profile of
a freind. The museum was so inspiring, I think I may go more often.
You'll get more drawing from there and based on images from there. You
can go, do.

It's a couple of days later, but...

Here's hoping your new year started off with a Bang! And that there are many more where that came from in the year to come. Hope you all enjoyed new years eve, and hopefully we will all see more of each other soon. By the way i actually finished this piece the day before the holiday, but i didn't get a chance to post it until now. Hope you like it!
